Background of Vidyasagar Science Olympiad

  • Vidyasagar Science Olympiad is a great initiative from the Department of School Education, Government of West Bengal and Jagadis Bose National Science Talent Search, Kolkata for identifying and nurturing Science talents of our state when they are very young.
  • The students of class IX are of special significance as it is the period when students get preliminary exposure to the advanced level of every spectrum of Science.
  • Enrich their in-depth scientific understanding which in turn will be beneficial to strengthen the pool of human resource of our state in the field of science and technology.

Objectives of Vidyasagar Science Olympiad

  • Identification of talented science students of West Bengal.
  • To expose the young minds to the diverse fields of Science and Technology and motivate them for studying science.
  • Capacity building through science Workshops, seminers and by hands on activities.
  • To motivate for inventions and innovations by encouraging and developing their creative aptitude.
  • To nurture the talented students to face the challenges of national and international science Olympiads.
  • To strengthen the contribution from our State in National and International Olympiad platform.

Eligibility Criteria of Vidyasagar Science Olympiad

School Category:
  • All Non-government recognised Aided and Sponsored schools.
  • All D.A getting school under West Bengal Board of Secondary Education.
Students' Category:

For students of Class-IX:
Top five (05) students of Class IX of a school (nominated by Headmaster/Assistant Headmaster/ Teacher in Charge of a school) based on the performance in the Annual Examination of class VIII. 

Syllabus of Vidyasagar Science Olympiad

For students of Class-IX:
The examination will be based up to Class VIII Science and Mathematics syllabus of West Bengal State Board. Model questions can be downloaded from website.

Top 100 Scholars will be selected as West Bengal State Science Olympiad Winner

Layer-3
State Level Competition
Participants: Top 20% students of each district selected through Layer-2 provided they have to score at least 40% of the total marks in Layer-2. Apart from these, students who will score 60% of the total marks in Layer-2, will qualify for the Layer-3.

Layer-2
Competition among the students under district of West Bengal
Participants: Top 10% students of each unit selected through Layer-1 provided they have to score at least 30% of the total marks in Layer-1. Apart from these, students who will score 50% of the total marks in Layer-1, will qualify for the Layer-2.

Layer-1
Competition among the students under each demo graphical unit 
(Block/Municipality/ Borough of Municipal Corporations) of our State
Participants: Top 05 (five) students of Class IX each school of a unit based on the performance in the Annual Examination of Class VIII.

One examination center in each of the Units (Blocks/Borough/Municipal corporations)-across the state.

Outcome of 1st Layer:
  • Top 3 candidates of each Unit will be awarded a Book Grant of Rs.1,000/- (One thousand only) provided they have to score at least 40% of the total marks in Layer I.
  • Top 10% students from each Unit will qualify for Second Layer of Examination and will be acknowledged by participation certificate provided they have to score at least 30% of the total marks in Layer I.
  • For each unit, students who have scored 50% of the total marks in Layer-1, will qualify for the Second level irrespective of his/her rank and will be recognized by participation certificate.

Second layer Examination : Intra District Competition

  •  This test will be conducted for the top 10% qualified students from first level of all unit of a district provided they have to score at least 30% of the total marks in Layer-1 and students who will score 50% of the total marks in Layer-1.

Outcome of 2nd Layer:
  • Top 10 candidates of each district will be awarded a Book Grant of Rs.2,000/- (Two thousand only) provided they have to score at least 40% of the total marks in Layer II.
  • Top 20% students from each district will qualify for Third Layer of Examination provided they have to score at least 40% of the total marks in Layer II.
  • For each district, students who have scored 60% of the total marks, will qualify for the Third level irrespective of his/her rank and will be recognized by participation certificate.

Third layer Examination : Intra State Competition

  •  This test will be conducted among top 20% qualified students from Second level of all Districts of our State provided they have to score at least 40% of the total marks in Layer II and students who will score 60% of the total marks in Layer II

Outcome of 3rd Layer:
  • Finally, top One hundred (100) students from all over West Bengal will be selected as scholarship awardees.
  • Scholarship (for 2 years) of Rs.1000/- per month during class 9 and class 10 and annual book grant of Rs.2500/- for two years and certificate.
  • Each of the selected students will get the opportunity to participate two science workshops and there will be training session for individual subject wise National Olympiad Examination.

How to Apply for Vidyasagar Science Olympiad 2024

Only Headmaster (H.M.) / Assistant Headmaster (A.H.M.) / Teacher in Charge (T.I.C.) of a school can apply for their students for Vidyasagar Science Olympiad 2024

Please read all the instructions below, before starting the application process :

Part-I
School's Registration
by Headmaster (H.M.) / Assistant Headmaster (A.H.M.) / Teacher in Charge (T.I.C.) of the school 
  • Fill up the School UDISE Code as per Banglar Shiksha Portal in the specified box and click on Submit button.
  • School's Name, Block /Municipality / Borough of a Municipal Corporation and District will automatically appeared in respective places (if UDISE Code is correctly provided).
  • Fill up the boxes of School's Address, PIN Code, Name, Mobile no. and E-mail ID of Headmaster (H.M.) / Assistant Headmaster (A.H.M.) / Teacher in Charge (T.I.C.) of the school.
  • Upload the scanned copy (in a PDF file) of the Recommendation letter (format given) of Headmaster (H.M.) / Assistant Headmaster (A.H.M.) / Teacher in Charge (T.I.C.) of the school in School's Letter head containing top 05 (Maximum) Students' Name, Guardians' Name, and their Percentage (%) of marks in Final Examination of Class-VIII and the Signature of the individual student.
  • Please check once again to verify that all the boxes are filled properly before uploading the scan copy. You cannot edit any information after submission.
  • Click on the "Please Proceed for Students' Registration" button.
  • A new page will appear which shows the message - "Your School Record is successfully uploaded". Then you have to click on the "Please click here to proceed for registration of students".
  • Student registration page will be opened.
    Part-II
    Student's Registration
Responsibility has to be Headmaster (H.M.) / Assistant Headmaster (A.H.M.) / 
Teacher in Charge (T.I.C.) of the school

  • School Code, School's Name, Block/ Municipal Corporation and District will automatically appeared in respective places.
  • Fill up the 1st Student's Name, Guardian's Name, Gender, Student code / ID number as per Banglar Siksha Portal.
  • Fill up the contact number and E-mail ID of the student (if any).
  • Fill up the percentage (%) of Marks (in aggregate) of the student obtained in the Final Examination of Class VIII.
  • Upload the scanned copy of recent Passport size photograph of the student in JPG format in the specified place for that particular student.
  • Upload the scanned copy of full Signature of the student in JPG format in the specified place for that particular student.
  • Fill up the Capcha Code properly, appeared in the adjacent box.
  • Click on the Register Button.
  • A message "Student Record Successfully Updated" will be shown and then it will automatically back to the page for registration of the next student. At the bottom of the page the list of the already registered students for the same school will be displayed in a table.
    Part-III
  • Please repeat the same (Sl.No 2 to 9 of Part-II) procedure for 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Students one after another.
  • After submission of the information of the 5th candidate, "Already 5 (five) students (Maximum number) have Registered their name from (respective School's Name)" - message will be displayed and Registration of further students cannot be made.
  • Please take a Print out the list of all recommended candidates and please note their respective registration numbers for your future reference.
