Disclaimer of Vidyasagar Science Olympiad
Vidyasagar Science Olympiad is a new endeavor from the Department of School Education, Government of West Bengal and JBNSTS (Jagadis Bose National Science Talent Search)for identifying and nurturing Science talents of West Bengal.
The first layer of examination has been scheduled on 7th May 2023 (Sunday) during 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm. The schedule may be postponed/ cancelled in case of any unavoidable circumstances and consequent Government restrictions. The authority will not be responsible for postponement/ cancellation of this endeavor.
Background of Vidyasagar Science Olympiad
- Vidyasagar Science Olympiad is a great initiative from the Department of School Education, Government of West Bengal and Jagadis Bose National Science Talent Search, Kolkata for identifying and nurturing Science talents of our state when they are very young.
- The students of class IX are of special significance as it is the period when students get preliminary exposure to the advanced level of every spectrum of Science.
- Enrich their in-depth scientific understanding which in turn will be beneficial to strengthen the pool of human resource of our state in the field of science and technology.
Objectives of Vidyasagar Science Olympiad
- Identification of talented science students of West Bengal.
- To expose the young minds to the diverse fields of Science and Technology and motivate them for studying science.
- Capacity building through science Workshops, seminers and by hands on activities in state-of-art laboratories.
- To develop inventions and innovations aptitude by encouraging their creative ability.
- To nurture the talented students to face the challenges of national and international science Olympiads.
- To strengthen the contribution of the scientific fraternity from the state in the global perspective.
Eligibility Criteria of Vidyasagar Science Olympiad
School Category:
- All government schools under West Bengal Board of Secondary Education.
- All Non-government recognised Aided and Sponsored schools.
- All D.A getting school under West Bengal Board of Secondary Education.
Students' Category:
For students of Class-IX:
Top five (05) students of Class IX of a school nominated by Headmaster/Assistant Headmaster/ Teacher in Charge of a school based on the performance in the Annual Examination of class VIII.

The examination will be based up to Class VIII Science and Mathematics syllabus of West Bengal State Board. Model questions can be downloaded from website.

Guidelines for conduct of Vidyasagar Science Olympiad 2023

With reference to the subject mentioned above, the undersigned is directed to inform him/her that as in last year tri-layered Vidyasagar Science Olympiad 2023 is going to be held in this year also to extract and identify the pre-madhyamik science talents (Students of class IX) form concerns of West Bengal. It is an initiative from the Department of School Education, Government of West Bengal and Jagadis Bose National Science Talent Search (JBNSTS), The Layer-I Vidyasagar Science Olympiad Examination 2023 is scheduled to be held on 7th May 2023. The dates of Layer-II and III Vidyasagar Science Olympiad Examination 2023 will be informed in due course of time. The criteria of appearing Vidyasagar Science Olympiad 2023 is as follows:-
Top five (05) students of Class IX of any recognized Government/Government Sponsored/Non-government Aided/ D.A getting school of West Bengal (nominated by Headmaster/ Assistant Headmaster/ Teacher in Charge of a school based on the performance Total % of marks obtained) in the Annual Examination of class VIII are eligible to apply for Vidyasagar Science Olympiad 2023 (Layer I)
The examination will be based up to class VIII Science and Mathematics syllabus of West Bengal State Board, Model Questions can be download from the website.
The detailed information of Layer I, II and III Vidyasagar Science Olympiad Examination 2023 is as follows:
First layer Examination : Intra Unit Competition

Outcome of 1st Layer:
- Top 3 candidates of each Unit will be awarded a Book Grant of Rs.1,000/- (One thousand only) provided they have to score at least 40% of the total marks in Layer I.
- Top 10% students from each Unit will qualify for Second Layer of Examination and will be acknowledged by participation certificate provided they have to score at least 30% of the total marks in Layer I.

The Provisional Answer Keys of Vidyasagar Science Olympiad 2023 have been uploaded in this portal for feedback (if there be any) from the appeared candidates with in 14th May, 2023 through email to vso@jbnsts.ac.in . All the feedback should be supported by necessary source / documents/ clarifications; otherwise the feedbacks will not be accepted. Any feedback after 14th May, 2023 will not be entertained.

Second layer Examination : Intra District Competition
- This test will be conducted for the top 10% qualified students from first level of all unit of a district.

Outcome of 2nd Layer:
- Top 10 candidates of each district will be awarded a Book Grant of Rs.2,000/- (Two thousand only) provided they have to score at least 40% of the total marks in Layer II.
- Top 20% students from each district will qualify for Third Layer of Examination provided they have to score at least 40% of the total marks in Layer II.
Third layer Examination : Intra State Competition
- This test will be conducted among top 20% qualified students from Second level of all Districts of our State.

Outcome of 3rd Layer:
- Finally, top One hundred (100) students from all over West Bengal will be selected as scholarship awardees.
Scholarship of Vidyasagar Science Olympiad
Class IX:
- Scholarship (for 2 years) of Rs. 1,000/- (One thousand only) per month during class IX and X and annual book grant of Rs. 2,500/- (Two thousand five hundred only) for two years and certificate.
- Each of the selected students will get the opportunity to participate in two science workshops/ training session for individual subject wise National Olympid Examination.

As in previous year Vidyasagar Science Olympiad Examination 2022 draft assigned activities of all officials related with Vidyasagar Science Olympiad are given below:
DI/S (Secondary Education)
DI/S (Secondary Education) will select the Examination, Centres in each Block /Municipality Corporation in consultation with the district administration keeping in mind that the Examination, venues (with sufficient infrastructure) should be easily accessible by the students. It should also be nearby the Custodian point (At least 01 Examination Centre in each Unit (Block /Municipality /Borough of Municipal Corporation) across the State). For larger Municipalities, 2 or more centers may be allotted. The number of centres in each district may not be less than the number of centres in Vidyasagar Science Olympiad 2022.The number of centres in each district may be selected in anticipation that the number of candidates in each centre will not be more than 500.
Centre Superintendent
Head of the Institution (HOI) of the selected examination centre will act as the Centre Superintendent. He/she jointly with the Officer in Charge will verify the sealed packet details at the office of the Custodian of Confidential Papers well before the examination date. They will jointly collect the confidential papers from the Custodian point one day before the date of examination for starting the examination in time. After completion of the examination both of them will jointly submit the confidential papers to the concerned official (District Co-ordinator) at district Head Quarter for onward delivery to JBNSTS.
Officer in Charge
One Sub-Inspector of Schools (SI/s) or Assistant Inspector of Schools (AI/S) will be nominated by the concerned DI/S (Secondary Education) to act as the Officer in Charge of the Examination Centre. He/she will jointly verify the sealed packet details at the office of the Custodian of Confidential Papers well before the examination date. They will jointly collect the confidential papers from the Custodian point one day before the date of examination for starting the examination in time. After completion of the examination both of them will jointly submit the confidential papers to the concerned official (District Co-ordinator) at district Head Quarter for onward delivery to JBNSTS.
Custodian of Confidential Papers
DI/S (Secondary Education) will select the Custodian of Confidential Papers in consultation with the district administration. Treasury Officer of the nearby Treasury/ Officer in Charge of the concerned Police Station will act as the Custodian of Confidential Papers as per direction of the appropriate authority.
District Co-ordinator
One AI/S or SI/S may be entrusted by the concerned DI/S (Secondary Education) to act as District Co-ordinator (Vidyasagar Science Olympiad) for overall monitoring and smooth implementation of all activities in this regard including collection and submission of the confidential papers to JBNSTS after completion of the examination.
Centre Superintendent, Officer in Charge of the examination centre, custodian (except District Co-ordinator which is to be submitted separately) of a district will be selected by DI/S (Secondary Education) and the said names with their detailed information of the same will be submitted within 5th March 2023 positively in the Google Sheet.

Result of Layer-1 Examination of VSO 2023

Selection Criteria
Based on the performances in the Layer-1 Examination, top 10% of the appeared candidates OR top 3 candidates (Whichever is maximum) of every individual Unit (Block/Municipality/ Borough (for Municipal Corporations) have been selected for Layer-2 examination, provided they have scored at least 30% of the total marks.
Top 3 candidates of each Unit (Block/Municipality/ Borough (for Municipal Corporations) have been selected for Book Grant of Rs.1000/- (One thousand only) provided they have scores at least 40% of the total marks.
In both of the above selection processes, if there is a TIE between the last position of the selected candidate with its immediate next candidate(s) for a particular Unit, they have been included in the list for the respective unit.
To get the List of selected candidates for Layer-2, and select the name of the District from the drop down menu and then select the name of the Unit from the drop down menu in the appropriate place. A list of selected candidates for the Layer 2 examination of individual Unit (Block/Municipality/ Borough (for Municipal Corporations) including the Unit wise Rank of the candidate will be displayed.
To obtain the Book Grant, eligible candidate should have a Bank Account in his/ her name or jointly with parents/ guardians. HM / TIC/ School Authority are required to provide the Bank Account Details of the candidates who are eligible for Book Grant by Clicking on the Yes (in the same row of his/her name, VSO Registration No) in the Column 'Book Grant Eligibility' on his/her behalf.Requirements for submission of Bank Account DetailsUDISE code of the Present Institution (Candidate's School)
